I feel blessed to serve the Midview community! However, my career journey to Grafton-Midview Public Library took a few twists and turns. After college, I taught at the primary school level. The responsibility and challenges of working with young minds on varying levels created memories I will fondly remember forever. After seven years, I moved to the business arena, taking a customer service position with a high-end office manufacturing company. Working with designers was a completely different landscape, a stark contrast from the classroom. Meanwhile, I returned to school for post-baccalaureate business courses and worked part-time in retail. These experiences were invaluable. After five years, I entered an industry that few women had entered - a bronze distribution center. Here, I learned about foundries, finished machine parts, and shipping items worldwide, a challenging yet rewarding role that deepened my understanding of my dad’s lifelong work in machinery. This chapter also introduced me to my future husband, leading us to establish his bronze business when we relocated to Ohio. For 15 years, I stayed home, raising two sons and assisting with our business. When I re-entered the workforce once again, I chose a library as the place for me, surrounded by books and the public. Luckily, Kent State University offered a library science degree just an hour away. While studying, I found an opportunity at GMPL. This position would allow me to work in different areas of the Library and give me more experience as I continued my education. On my first day on the job, I knew this was the place to be. The staff was very kind, and the patrons were a delight, too! This March marks my twenty years of service at GMPL, a milestone I am proud of and a future I am excited about for the Library’s ever-evolving role in the community. Slated for January 2025, the Library Board of Trustees and administration are pleased to announce the opening of the Eaton Township Branch at 35965 East Royalton Road in Eaton Township. We hope to open in this leased building three days a week and bring essential programs and services such as tax assistance, tech tutoring, early literacy, and more. Stay watching for the announcement of our opening day and ribbon-cutting ceremony! We are also expanding the use of our mobile cooking unit, which a patron generously donated to our culinary literacy program. Under the guidance of our new Charley Cart Administrator, Valerie, children will learn how to use tools safely, measure correctly, and put together healthy yet delicious foods for all to enjoy. Look for her classes in the newsletter. We hope to expand these lessons to our local schools and adults. Look for our Preview for the Public on January 11 at 10 AM as we introduce Charlie to the community. IT’S A GREAT STORY In 2022, GMPL launched the Circle of Hope program in partnership with Hospice of the Western Reserve. This six-week program was designed to support individuals who were grieving the recent loss of a loved one, offering a safe space for them to process their emotions. For many, it started as a day of uncertainty, unsure how a library program could help with their grief. But by the end of the six-weeks, something beautiful unfolded—new connections were made, friendships blossomed, and the seeds of healing began to grow. John Kenny, one of our Adult Services Librarians, was approached by these individuals with a heartfelt request: they wanted to continue meeting and help others who were still struggling with their grief, even beyond the timeframe of the original program. This incredible group of individuals, whose bonds had deepened over the past weeks, recognized the support and comfort they found together was something worth sharing. And so, their journey continues, as they step forward to create a space of comfort and hope for others who walk with grief. I discovered this inspiring story one morning while working in my office, when I heard the sound of laughter from downstairs. Curious, I grabbed my camera to capture a fun moment, only to find that the laughter came from the Moving Forward with Hope group. When they saw me, one attendee apologized, thinking I was there to silence them. I laughed and reassured them I was just there to see the joy I was hearing from my office. It was heartwarming to witness a group of people, united by loss, coming together to find healing, hope, and friendship in the Library. They shared their stories with me and welcomed me into their circle with open arms. If you have lost a loved one and are struggling with grief, don’t hesitate to check out Moving Forward with Hope. This special group of people meet one Thursday a month in the Library at 10 AM. Registration is not required. Just stop by and you too could move forward with hope. - Tami Mullins, Communications Coordinator Patrons Start Their Own Program and Welcome Others to Join Them Registration is required.
